Dog Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years
Enter your dog’s age and size to see how old your dog is in human years. A 1 year old dog is about 15, a 2 year old about 24, and after that every year counts for 4 to 7 human years depending on how big your dog is. This dog age calculator does the math, shows the life stage and gives you a chart for every year.

How dog years really work
The old rule says one dog year equals seven human years. It is easy to remember and mostly wrong. Dogs grow up very fast in the first two years, then slow down. A one year old dog can already have puppies, which no seven year old child can do.
The guideline most vets use comes from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA):
- The first year of a dog’s life is about 15 human years.
- The second year adds about 9 more, so a 2 year old dog is about 24.
- After that, each year adds about 4 to 7 human years, depending on size.
Size matters because big dogs age faster. A Great Dane is old at 7, while a Chihuahua can still be lively at 14. That is why the calculator asks for your dog’s adult size.
Dog age chart by size
The human age for each dog age, rounded. Weight means the weight as a fully grown adult.
| Dog age | Small (up to 9 kg) | Medium (9 to 23 kg) | Large (23 to 41 kg) | Giant (over 41 kg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| 2 years | 24 | 24 | 24 | 24 |
| 3 years | 28 | 29 | 30 | 31 |
| 5 years | 36 | 39 | 42 | 45 |
| 7 years | 44 | 49 | 54 | 59 |
| 10 years | 56 | 64 | 72 | 80 |
| 12 years | 64 | 74 | 84 | 94 |
| 15 years | 76 | 89 | 102 | 115 |
Giant breeds rarely reach 15, which is why the last numbers look so high.
The DNA method: a newer way to count dog years
In 2019, researchers at the University of California San Diego compared chemical changes in the DNA of Labrador Retrievers and people as they age. Their formula is: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, where ln is the natural logarithm.
It says young dogs age even faster than the AVMA rule suggests. By this measure, a 1 year old dog is like a 31 year old person, and a 4 year old dog is already about 53. The calculator shows this as a second estimate for dogs over one year. Keep in mind the study looked at one breed only, so treat it as interesting, not exact.
Dog life stages
| Stage | Age | What it means for care |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy | Under 1 year | Vaccines, training, puppy food, lots of sleep |
| Young adult | 1 to 3 years | Peak energy, adult food, regular exercise |
| Mature adult | 4 years until senior | Watch weight and teeth, yearly vet checks |
| Senior | From about 10 (small), 8 (medium), 7 (large) or 6 (giant) | Vet checks every 6 months, softer exercise, joint care |
The American Animal Hospital Association describes the senior stage as the last quarter of a dog’s expected life, which is why it starts earlier for big dogs.
How to tell a dog’s age if you do not know the birthday
Adopted a dog from the street or a shelter? A vet can give you a good estimate, and you can check a few signs yourself:
- Teeth: puppies get all their adult teeth by about 6 to 7 months. Clean white teeth suggest a young dog. Yellow stains, tartar and worn teeth point to an older one.
- Grey hair: a grey muzzle often starts after 5 to 7 years, though some dogs go grey early.
- Eyes: a slight blue, cloudy look in the eyes is common in older dogs.
- Energy and body: stiff joints, slower walks and more sleep usually come with age.
Once you have a rough age, pick “I know the age” above and enter your best guess.

A note on accuracy
Every dog age formula is an estimate. Breed, genetics, weight, food and health all change how fast a dog ages. Use the number as a fun guide and a reminder of the life stage your dog is in, and talk to your vet about anything to do with health. This calculator runs on your phone and does not send or save anything you enter.
FAQs About Dog Years
How old is a 1 year old dog in human years?
About 15. A one year old dog is like a teenager: almost grown, full of energy and still learning manners.
Is one dog year equal to seven human years?
No. That rule is too simple. Dogs age much faster in the first two years (about 24 human years by age two) and then add about 4 to 7 human years each year, depending on size.
How old is a 10 year old dog in human years?
Between 56 and 80. A small dog at 10 is about 56, a medium dog about 64, a large dog about 72 and a giant dog about 80.
At what age is a dog a senior?
Around 10 for small dogs, 8 for medium dogs, 7 for large dogs and 6 for giant breeds. Senior dogs do best with vet checks every six months.
Why do big dogs age faster than small dogs?
Scientists are still studying it, but big dogs grow very fast and their bodies wear out sooner. That is why large and giant breeds usually have shorter lives than small breeds.
