How cat years work
You may have heard that one cat year equals seven human years. Cats do not age in a straight line like that. Kittens grow up incredibly fast: by six months a kitten is roughly like a 10 year old child, and by its first birthday it is like a 15 year old teenager.
The chart used by International Cat Care, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) works like this:
- The first year is about 15 human years.
- By the second birthday a cat is about 24.
- After that, each cat year adds about 4 more.
Unlike dogs, cats of different sizes age at about the same speed, so the calculator does not ask for weight.

Cat life stages
The AAHA and AAFP feline life stage guidelines (2021) split a cat’s life into four stages. Knowing the stage helps you choose the right food and vet care.
| Stage | Cat age | Human age | Care focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitten | Birth to 1 year | Up to 15 | Vaccines, neutering, kitten food, play |
| Young adult | 1 to 6 years | 15 to 40 | Healthy weight, dental care, yearly check |
| Mature adult | 7 to 10 years | 44 to 56 | Watch weight and kidneys, yearly blood tests |
| Senior | Over 10 years | Over 56 | Vet checks every 6 months, easy access to litter and food |
How long do cats live?
Many indoor cats live into their mid or late teens, and some reach 20. Cats that roam outdoors face traffic, fights and infections, so on average they live shorter lives. The oldest cat on record, Creme Puff from Texas, lived to 38, which works out to about 168 on the chart above.
Good food, a healthy weight, clean teeth and regular vet visits do more for a long life than anything else.
How to tell a cat’s age without papers
Found a street cat or adopted one with no records? A vet can estimate the age, and these signs help:
- Teeth: kittens have all their adult teeth by about 6 months. Some yellowing by 1 to 2 years, tartar in middle age and worn or missing teeth in older cats.
- Coat: young cats have soft, shiny fur. Older cats groom less, so the coat can look rougher.
- Eyes: bright, clear eyes suggest youth. Cloudiness and a lacy look in the iris are common in senior cats.
- Muscle and energy: seniors are often bonier along the back and sleep more.

A note on accuracy
Every cat age chart is an estimate. Genes, food, indoor or outdoor life and health all change how a cat ages. Use the result as a guide to your cat’s life stage, and ask your vet about anything to do with health. The calculator works on your phone and does not send or save what you enter.
